Driveways and Patios in Birmingham

A driveway and patio do two jobs. The drive is the first thing anyone sees and a tired, weed-cracked one drags down the look of the whole house, while a well-built patio turns the back garden into a room you actually use. J Dowd & Sons design and lay block paving, UV-stable resin and porcelain or natural sandstone surfaces across Birmingham that stay level, shed water and still look the part years down the line.

Why the ground beneath matters most

Much of Birmingham and the wider West Midlands sits on shrinkable clay soil. Clay swells when it is wet and shrinks back in a dry summer, and a surface laid on a shallow or skimped base will heave, dip and crack as the ground moves under it. This is the single most common reason cheap driveways fail. We build for that ground: we excavate to the correct depth, lay a geotextile membrane to separate the soil from the stone, then put down and compact a deep MOT Type 1 sub-base, layer by layer, with plate compactors. That base is what keeps the finished surface flat for the long term.

Surfaces to suit the property

  • Block paving is the workhorse for driveways. It takes the weight of cars easily, comes in dozens of colours and patterns, and a single block can be lifted and reset if it ever needs a repair.
  • Resin-bound gravel gives a smooth, seamless, contemporary finish in a wide range of aggregate colours, is permeable and resists weeds.
  • Porcelain and natural sandstone are our patio favourites: porcelain is hard-wearing and stain-proof with an anti-slip textured surface, while sandstone gives a warmer, traditional look that suits an older garden.

Drainage and the rules around it

Front gardens have to deal with their rainwater. A non-permeable driveway over five square metres that drains onto the public highway can need planning permission, so we either build in permeable surfaces and jointing that let water soak away on site, or form proper drainage channels and soakaways that meet the SUDS requirements. We advise you on which applies and handle any paperwork if it is needed.

Design that suits the house

A driveway looks right when it belongs to the property rather than fighting it. We spend time at the start matching the surface to the age and style of the house and to the brick and stone already there, then setting out borders, soldier courses and patterns that frame the drive instead of just filling it. The same thinking goes into a patio: getting the size, the orientation to the sun and the link back to the house right is what makes the difference between a slab of paving and an outdoor space the family actually sits in. You see colour and pattern samples before anything is laid.

Built to last and guaranteed

Edge restraints, drainage channels and recessed manhole covers are fitted as we go, and most 50 square metre projects are finished in four to five days. Block paving takes traffic after about 48 hours, and resin and porcelain need around 24 hours to cure. Every project finishes with our written workmanship guarantee alongside the manufacturer surface warranties.
