A chimney stack that has moved out of plumb is a structural emergency. It means the mortar holding the brickwork together has failed sufficiently that the stack is no longer self-supporting. On Victorian and Edwardian brickwork, we always use NHL (natural hydraulic lime) mortar - Portland cement is harder than the brick, traps moisture, and causes spalling. Repointing is the most straightforward chimney repair and, done properly on a stack in otherwise good condition, will last 20 to 30 years.
Relaunching (renewing the flaunching) replaces the cracked or loose cement collar at the top of the stack. The old flaunching is broken off, the top courses inspected, and new mortar is formed around the pot bases at the correct angle. Often done alongside repointing.
Leadwork renewal replaces failed step and cover flashings. Lead is chased into the brickwork, secured with lead wedges, and pointed over with a non-shrink sealant. We use Code 4 or Code 5 lead as appropriate to the pitch and exposure. A properly installed lead flashing on a Birmingham chimney will outlast the brickwork it is fixed to.
